I really like it. Hopefully when it shows up at dealers it will be ready for prime time. Now it is Toyota's turn in January at Detroit to show the new Prius.

That roof is definitely not production though. Then again, maybe...

I think it is the best looking hybrid out there. Hopefully it has the substance to back the looks and does not end up like the PT Cruiser.

Nothing is 100% on the car, it's like 1.5 year away from launch and some of the eye candy like the side mirrors and the all white dash won't make it to production.

Re: Production Chevy Volt released

Without spilling too many beans - a major industry survey has just coughed up some pretty negative marks for the Volt.

In short - styling hasn't connected and purchase consideration is lower than was prior to the debut.

I'd give more info, but then I'd have to kill you.

I wish there was a survey about how many people who would buy a GM believe in global warming. Cause I think that is where the problem lies, not this car. I get the impression most people who would buy a GM think global warming is some made up liberal conspiracy between the scientists and the polar bears to deny them their god given right to drill oil where ever it might be. And most people who are environment conscious and would buy a hybrid are not really big into GM (or other domestic makes for that matter). But GM has to change that to stay relevant in the future and I think Volt is a brilliant start.

...and my apologies for liberal use of stereotypes.

Re: Production Chevy Volt released

IMO this about the Volt's styling is silly. Nobody who knows anything about cars could have expected it to looked just like the concept, those consumers are just clueless about car design and the practical side of it. Secondly, people don't buy these type of cars for their styling. Lastly, it still looks better than any competing Toyota and its copycat lookalike, the new Honda Insight.

Re: Production Chevy Volt released

Thanks for the link. Interesting. Its electric only with the engine/generator not having any connection to the wheels. I didn't know that. This is a far beyond any Honda or Toyota "hybrid".

If GM is smart they'll offer regular hybrid version also to compete with the Japanese. The promise this car holds is greater than anything from an American manufacturer in the time I've been around. Paramount.

I was actually kind of impressed by how it looked

Kind of muscular and futuristic. Not bland and boring like most smaller cars, including hybrids.

Yeah I like its looks too. Looks like a regular or hybrid car, not some goofy experiment like the first generation Prius or Insight.

I guess it's a bit like the Owen Magnetic. The motor is there only to run the electric engine.

Although the Owen Magnetic had (as far as I can remember) an electric motor for each wheel.

Here's Jay Leno's:

JayLenosGarage.com -- 1913 Owen Magnetic

I don't know how to post the video directly

Re: Chevy Volt (Production Version) @ 2008 Paris Auto Show

Hmm..just a question:

It says the Volt will get 60 miles per gallon on (obviously) the gas engine. But is that combined? Meaning: you go 40 miles on the overnight charge, and then in the next 20 miles you use a gallon of gas recharging the batteries..?

Or is it that, once you hit the 40 mile point, the gas engine kicks in and in the next 60 miles you only use 1 gallon of gas..? For an 'actual' 100 mile per gallon average?

Edit:

I think I answered my own question

On TopGear it says, "Even with the engine cycling to keep the batteries at constant charge, the Volt will do about 60mpg."

So, essentially, the car will be able to go 60 miles on the power/electricity one gallon of gas is able to produce?
