Preview: 2010 Porsche Cayenne SUV

When Porsche’s Cayenne first hit the scene, the company famous for building sports cars was criticized for selling out with the launch of an overweight SUV derived from mundane family haulers from sister-companies VW and Audi. Rumors soon emerged claiming Porsche would launch a smaller ultra-performance SUV to maintain its sporty image but CEO Wendelin Wiedeking quickly put those rumors to bed.

Instead, it appears Porsche’s next-generation Cayenne will be that ‘smaller’ SUV. Due to arrive in late 2009, the new Cayenne is tipped to be based on Audi’s upcoming Q5 architecture – relegating it to the midsize SUV segment. These latest renderings give us an early look at the new SUV, revealing it will be markedly smaller than the current model. It will feature shorter overhangs and will lose any pretensions of being a genuine off-road vehicle.
The 2010 Cayenne will be a hard-edged performance vehicle with superior handling and dynamics to the current car. Despite being smaller, most of the powertrains will carry over either unchanged or with a slight bump in power, once again including both V6 and V8 models: naturally aspirated and turbocharged.
There will also be a hybrid variant, which according to Porsche’s director of hybrid development Michael Leiters, will return a fuel economy figure 26.8mpg (8.9L/100km). This same hybrid architecture will also be available in the Panamera and includes electric-powered steering, air conditioning and vacuum pumps for the brakes to further save fuel.

I don't really like the front of this car. It's such a sardonic grin! The back looks good, though.

When Porsche will conserve their design and shapes, like they do with the 911 model range, there will be no big design "improvements"! But in my opinion, the current Cayenne looks just great and there isn't so much to improve.

You're right, but I just don't want the new one to look like the pre facelifted Cayenne with unpainted cladding. Except for that I like the Cayenne. It can look awful in pictures but in real life it looks pretty good. I saw a black face lifted Turbo last week and I was stunned, amazing looking car.

Re: Preview: 2010 Porsche Cayenne SUV

I've never had problems with the way Cayenne looked. The facelift made it only better. I like these impressions but I hope the front lights weren't taken straight from the Carrera GT because that won't happen with the real next generation Cayenne either.

Using a smaller cheaper platform for the next gen Cayenne is what I call cheating
No wonder it will be better driving if you make a much smaller, agile car..

So people are going to pay much more than an Q7 costs for something that basicly is a Q5....
...only at VAG Next gen Cayenne should be compared to the BMW X3!

I hope more different than the 996 is to the 997...but that is almost inevitable, because the dimensions will change

Common misconception. Just because two cars are based on the same platform doesn't mean that they are identical. The Toureg, Cayenne and Q7 share the same platform but have zero in common when it comes to drive train, size and driving characteristics. although the new Cayenne is based on the Q5 it's size is going to between the Q5 and current generation Cayenne, rather than be a direct Q5 competitor. Just look at the Q7, based on the same platform as the Cayenne but is much larger.

So don't get it twisted, the new Cayenne is not going to be of the same size as the Q5, X3 and GLK. Interior space shouldn't be a too big of a leap backwards, it's more that the overall exterior size and appearance of the car is going to be sleeker.

Porsche Cayenne: V6 TDI 3.0 diesel confirmed, Hybrid also coming
Despite long-time denials of such plans, Porsche has now confirmed that the Porsche Cayenne will receice a diesel engine in 2009. The engine will be take from VW, it's the V6 TDI 3.0 with 240 PS from the VW Touareg.

But there's more to come: the Porsche Cayenne will also get a Hybrid option in 2010. That's especially interesting, because this option was just being killed for the Audi Q7.

Re: Preview: 2010 Porsche Cayenne SUV

The only good looking car Porsche makes is the 911.
Current Cayenne is ugly, new Cayenne will be ugly. Boxter is ugly and Cayman is ugly....and Panamera will be ugliest of all.

The engine will be take from VW, it's the V6 TDI 3.0 with 240 PS from the VW Touareg.

^^ How freaking utterly pathetic is that? The Great Porsche with some stupid retarded VW diesel engine.....?!?!?!?! LMFAO

Good news. The torque figure shall be very comparable with the xDrive30d and will be a great choice for those who actually interested in a respectable fuel economy as opposed to the people who'll be buying the hybrid pretending to be tree huggers.

The Cayenne is one of those designs that looked devastating when I first saw it (Like *** were they thinking?), however with time, it has actually grown to look better and better, and IMO the facelift is just excellent. Definitely one of the best facelifts ever.

Very true. The pre-facelifted didn't look too in basic trim with unpainted cladding. But the facelift is pure eye candy, very attractive car. I can agree that the car is not photogenic, especially the front end, but in real life it has its charm.
