W204 C-Class gets full five-star rating from EURONCAP

As expected the new C-Class has got full five stars from the EURONCAP.

Comments
Front impact
The passenger compartment remained stable during the impact. The dummy results showed that the front seat passengers' knees and femurs were well protected and Mercedes were able to show that the car would provide similar protection to occupants of different sizes and to those sat in different seating positions.

Side impact
The car scored maximum points for its performance in the side impact and pole tests.

Child-protection
A system is available as an option on the C-Class which automatically recognises when a child restraint is fitted to the front passenger seat and disables the airbag. The system was not fitted to to the test vehicle. Without it, a rearward facing child restraint should not be used in the front passenger seat as the airbag cannot be manually disabled. The label warning of the dangers of doing to so was not permanently attached. The presence of ISOFIX anchorages was not clearly marked.

Pedestrian protection
The bumper scored maximum points for its protection of pedestrians' legs. However, the bonnet was rated as predominantly poor for the protection offered to pedestrians' legs by its front edge and to adults' heads by the bonnet surface.

I stil think the pedestrian stuff is bunch of BS. I just can't see how shaping the front of a car like a wall is going to make much difference. Pedestrian's head hit the hood of the car? Well duh what the hell do you expect! Stupid, stupid, stupid if you ask me. Would you rather the pedestrian be thrown in the air instead?

The worry in a pedestrian collision is having the pedestrian's head hit the engine and all the unyielding metal underneath the hood. The requirements are for a certain amount of space between the hood and the top of the engine. This is why many newer cars have much bigger or higher noses - look at the new Mini. The Jaguar XK has polytechnic charges in the hood that lifts the hood several inches if the car senses a pedestrian collision.

I understand that part, but it seems the C got knocked in this area because the dummys head hit the hood period??? Personally I think the idea of padding/space between the hood and engine is a great, but these blunt front ends (like on the C) are going to shove a real person so hard to the point of throwing them in the air IMO. A test dummy and a real person are two different things. Everyone isnt the same size and weight either. I don't think these ped ratings are too import. Cars have long ceased have real bumpers with metal and sharp grilles etc.

<<I want to know how one gets hit in the side by a pole?? Who thinks up these test?>>

Go to wreckedexotics dot com and look at all cars wrapped around trees and posts.

Click on exotics and then bad wrecks.

BTW, the current Auto motor und Sport article on NCAP tests shows the W204 coming in second to a Renault. And then there is the Smart.......... splat
