BMW considers selling engines to other carmakers

BMW is renowned for building some of the best engines in the world. You just have to look at its recent standings in the International Engine of the Year awards, to see that BMW is on top of things when it comes to designing world-beating powerplants. However, other carmakers may not have to feel entirely downbeat because a German magazine is reporting that BMW is considering selling its engines to other makes.

CEO Norbert Reithofer revealed to Germany’s Manager Magazin that BMW is looking at other sources of revenues for its long-term strategy, and selling engines was just one possibility.

But don’t hold your breath waiting for the latest M division V8 to be sold as a crate engine to anyone willing to scoff up the cash. BMW would most likely sell its less premium engines, such as the four-cylinder units it already shares with Peugeot, and the markets with the greatest potential are more likely to be India and China’s rapidly growing auto sectors.

Re: BMW considers selling engines to other carmakers

I assume they're talking about other mainstream manufacturers? Because they already supply tons of engine to other small manfacturers (Wiesmann, Ascari, Morgan, etc)

Would be nice to have the source of this, but Eni or SCOTT will give us some more info and either confirmation or denial.

Anyhow, i have nothing against 4cyl engines, except one: the new 2.0TT 204hp diesel. A-a! That one remains! 6, 8 and 12 cyl engines? Don't even think about it!

BMW are currently considering numerous future strategies for further growth (revenues). From huge product portfolio extension of all BMW-owned brands (including inactive ones!), to possible mergers & acquisitions within automotive branch, from selling tech & parts developed by BMW, to investing in new joint-ventures or acquisitions outside automotive branch (eg. consulting services, banking & insurance services, design studios, technical / engineering solutions, IT, energetics etc)!

Nobody knows yet what will be the chosen strategies. They are playing with all possible options! Some of them are very absurd - I won't even mention them since they are a blasphemy. Use your imagination.

There is only one thing that is evident: status quo is out of the question! Status quo would kill BMW AG, or at least made it very vulnerable (for possible hostile takeover).

I'm very eager to see what the future will bring.

Sounds like a reasonable plan, like Bruce said they do already share engines with quite a few specialist cars.

I don't think it will go that far. As opposed to more stock market orientated companies the Quandts still control the company and their no.1 objective is the survival and prosperity of the company, not short term profits to please the Quarter result boys.

but when BMW are saying "sell" they mean like just produce 10-20 a year? or a whole factory for another company?

You know what I don't think I get it..

From a financial point of view, it looks like BMW will earn money not lose,
so I guess it's the best for the company.

Exactly.

Quandt familiy who owns almost a half of BMW stakes is interested in company's long-term performance & financial health.

That was also a reason Panke had to go: he was too much focused on current profits, and not paying enough attention to future developments.

They'll do anything - even some blasphemous moves - to provide a bright future for the company, and protect their long-term ownership in BMW AG.

Porsche / Piech family is doing the same thing with Porsche AG (eg. model portfolio expansions; investing in Volkswagen AG etc).
