Well.. Ladies and Gentlemen the difference is that A4 comes as an Avant, the A5 comes as a Sportback.. You see ?

Haha Audi... as long as you make a real good SAC model it's just fine with me.. I woun't buy either this SB or the Avant.

A6 or SAC

Perhaps, the difference will be that in the A4 Avant you have a headroom for rear passengers, where in the A5 Sportback, you don't.

Not hugely fond of this idea, either. They should make a Convertible A5 instead of an Estate.

I'd prefer the sportback model to be a three door fastback... kind of like the Alfa Romeo Brera, but in Audi fashion That would be a good differentiation.

AutoBild is reporting (in German) that in calendar week 13 of 2009, Audi is planning the start of production on a new model to be called the A5 Sportback. Little is known about this possible new offering, but Autobild is going against the prevailing wisdom that the Sportback will be a wagon-like offering, saying it will compete in the emerging swoopy sedan category currently populated by the Mercedes CLS, pending Porsche Panamera and recently revealed Vw Passat CC. While we're on the subject of the Passat CC, if this speculation is accurate, we're thinking this is V-Dub doing it's platform prostitution best with that new curvy roof line. We'll keep our ear to the ground for more details.

Good idea, very missing a four door coupe in the small premium car segment.

If that's the car I'd love it (red one).. but it would be just 10-20 max cm shorter than the A7 4door coupe..!

How real is that A5 Sportback (A5 4dr coupe hatch) project anyway? Is it real, or just a dream by AutoBild?

My thoughts exactly. Whilst the idea is nice and there is a clear opportunity to differentiate the model from the A4 and A6 Avants, I question as to whether it will sell in this image-orientated premium segment. Let's face it, no-one's going to buy a CLK wagon now are they?

Then again, with the market awash with every kind of crossover imaginable, I suppose that, given the right dose of stylistic appeal, the A5 SB could be viable after all. I still feel, however, that it needs more than just unique styling to differentiate the value proposition enough from that of a B8 A4 Avant.

As you all know Audi officials like to keep their mouth shut when it comes to new models but after a little research i found that AutoBild is right again. The A5 Sportback will be presented in next years Frankfurt Auto show and sales will start early 2009.

It will be a hybrid between a wagon and a 4 door coupe very similar to Huck's rendering. Think of it as similar to new Mitsubishi Sportback or Subaru Impreza.

Initial renderings made it look like a wagon and were all wrong.

It doesn't look anything like a wagon to me. It's a 5dr fastback ... Like Porsche Panamera. While A7 will be more sedan-ish, I guess. More CLS-like. Right?

But ... Does such a model differs enough from A4 sedan, A5 coupe & A6 sedan to succeed?

Isn't IAA in September, every 2 years, right? So how do you expect sales to start early 2009?

Audi A5 Sportback

For Audi, no niche is too small. You want proof? How does an A5 Sportback sound? The car you see here will be in dealers by 2009. In addition to the existing Avant estate and Allroad crossover wagon range, the product planners from Ingolstadt are now probing where they can shoehorn in Sportback models - and the A5 is next to receive the sporty wagon treatment.

Originally, the A5 Sportback was a Shortback - a kind of Avant with a drastically reduced rear overhang. But it did not look right, and it deservedly got the chop. Instead, the designers under Wolfgang Egger created an absolutely stunning coupé-hatchback hybrid worthy of the Sportback designation and revealed in our latest artist's impression.

Audi A5 Sportback: a sleeker estate

The A5 Sportback will combine styling elements of the A5, A4 saloon and A4 Avant - wrapped up in a super-sleek roofline, frameless side windows and a big sloping tailgate. Integrated in the hatchback is a motorised extending air deflector, which adds a sporty touch and works wonders for the downforce at 100mph-plus. Perfect for autobahn storming or posing.

A well placed engineer from Ingolstadt told CAR Online: 'With the Avant and the Sportback, we can attack the 3-series Touring and the T-model C-class from two sides. For Audi, this should mean about 50 percent more combined volume, 25 percent higher conquest rates and a 15 percent increase in market share in the segment.'

The A5 isn't the only model to get the Sportback treatment that started on the A3. The next A3 in 2011 will again have a Sportback, there will be a Sportback version of the next A6 - which looks different enough to wear the A7 moniker - and there may yet be an A8 Sportback inspired by the Avantissimo show car

A5 in oh-nine

But first up is the A5 Sportback. Production starts in April 2009.

Unlike the A7, which is - like the Mercedes CLS and the VW Passat CC - a four-door coupé with a conventional bootlid, the A5 Sportback combines Avant practicality with the aesthetics of an elegant saloon.

The new model shares the wheelbase and length of an A4 Avant, but it is as wide and low as the A5. Despite a variety of S-line packs, Audi has - somewhat surprisingly - backed off from the proposed S5 and RS5 versions of the Sportback. According to those in the know, that's because the Sportback will be priced aggressively to steal market share, rather than act as a low-volume halo product.

Audi A5 Sportback: the engine room

The familiar engine spectrum includes a more powerful 2.0-litre TFSI unit which delivers 211bhp and 258lb ft and an uprated 240bhp 3.0-litre V6 TDI which musters 368lb ft of torque. The modified dual-clutch S-tronic, which has seven instead of six forward ratios, will only be offered in conjunction with quattro all-wheel drive.

What´s so far missing from the A5 Sportback line-up are a hybrid version, a convincing answer to Efficient Dynamics and Fuel Efficiency concepts marketed by BMW and Mercedes, and the first iteration of the VW group's promising combined combustion system (CCS) engine. But it can only be a matter of time...

The more I think about this car, the more I doubt its purpose.

The A5 / S5 bodyshell should be left as is in order to preserve the upmarket coupe image of this model. If not executed carefully, a five door fastback design can really put potential buyers off with its repmobile associations.

The A5 needs a cabriolet version and that's all that it needs.

Oh please! when is this stupid rumor going to die???Along with the rumor of a Ferrari SUV it deserves to be in the rubbish bin.

Actually, if executed right, it could be a very interesting car. I don't understand all the negativism about something nobody's ever seen, especially since all three luxury badges have been rumored to have something similar in the works (PAC or Progressive Activity Coupe from BMW and CLK shooting brake from MB)

I've got an internal info A5 Sportback will be presented together with Bentley pick-up, Porsche Golf-fighter, and Skoda S-class rival.

Now there's a thought, a Bentley pickup. From now on, pick up your manure with style... or even better, how about a Bentley tractor? Surely no luxury badge would ever stoop to that... cough.... porsch.... cough

Seriously though, unlike the above mentioned form factors, I think A5 Sportback is probable. I mean, if BMW can have SAC, SAS, PAS, PAC etcetera, why the hell not?

I can say (for sure) that the A5 Sportback comes as a 5-door hatch .
