Exclamation Audi RS5 Thread (Spy pics & info)

So is this the new RS5?

To be blunt, we're not sure if this is the RS5. On the surface, this test car looks just like the S5 that was unveiled at Geneva at the start of March, right down to every last air scoop. But sources at Ingolstadt have confirmed to CAR Online that an RS5 is in the pipeline, and this vehicle could be a test bed for the range-topping model. Why else would this car be carrying such an array of test paraphernalia when the standard S5 is signed off?

The RS5 will be bestowed with a more toned-up body kit, to make it a worthy BMW M3 rival. Expect a similarly discrete-but-muscular treatment as the RS4; if Audi gets gets the new two-door right, it could be the closest we've come to a successor to the original 1980 Quattro.

So what do we know about the proposed RS5?

We expect the free-revving, naturally aspirated 4.2-litre V8 from the current RS4 to be installed in the A5's new platform. Count on at least 420 bhp and 317lb ft - enough for rampant acceleration of the 911-worrying variety.

The new layout moves the front axle 120mm further forward for better weight distribution, effectively nudging the motor back in the engine bay for a more even 55:45 front-rear balance. The A5's engineering boss, Stefan Härdl, told CAR Online that the new layout dramatically improves the handling. 'It really helps the steering - it's more precise and direct than even the RS4, we've removed all the elasticity.'

If proved true, this is great news - since the next A4, A6 and A8 will all use the same layout.

What else can we expect?

Audi’s Magnetic Ride dampers are a certainty, although you’ll have to shell out at least £1200 for them. A manual gearchange and rear-biased quattro four-wheel drive will be standard; 60 percent of drive goes to the rear wheels for more alert handling.

Will the R8’s ceramic brakes make an appearance on the RS5? If Audi wants to challenge Mercedes and even Porsche, it will have to pull out all the stops. Just don’t expect much change from £53,000.

See our full studio shoot and interview with the people behind the A5 in the new May 2007 issue of CAR Magazine, on sale 30 March

Re: Spy-shots: The new Audi RS5?

Wow what a surprise. It seem like Audi is eager to get the RS5 out on the roads as soon a possible. The RS5 might be available before 2009. My dream scenario is if Audi have the balls to stand up to BMW like a man and don't tune the V8 engine, leaving it like it is with 420hp.

No I don't. I just consider BMW to be brave enough not to produce an M3 equipped with more power than the competitor's engine.

I've yet to hear confirmation from Audi that the RS5 even competes against the M3, further more the A/S and RS5 is way more car than the 3-Series in every sense of the word! What you can do for me is let me know when BMW is "Brave" enough to make a interior worth a damn thing okay? You really shouldn't compare a complete car such as a A/S/RS5 to a one dimensional car like the M3. And please don't make this into a big thing okay? These is a thread about the RS5 not the M3, I got at you for that and that alone!

Now come on RICHBOY. Luwalira hasn't said anything to detract from the original topic, nor is he making anything a "big thing". He's simply drawing his "dream scenario".

When you said Luwalira gives BMW too much credit, I could say the same for you with one of the comments you've made above

Now everybody, let's keep it together.

Just ask yourself why Audi has launched the S5 faster than they have ever launched an S model or why they are testing the RS5 barely a month after launch. The answer is BMW M3.

LOL, just guessing...

But it's not impossible, right? The S5 camed immediately along with the launch of A5 series which was the 1st time ever Audi did that. Could be the same with RS5, that it comes much sooner than we think. And if that happens - FY Audi!

Re: Audi RS5 thread.

Do not underestimate the power of Audi.

Quattro, 420 Bhp and Suspension with Magnetic Dampers. This is going to be one very serious Sport Coupé. Both the BMW M3 and the Mercedes CLK 63 AMG better watch out! Audi is coming with guns blazing!

We all have seen already the wonders that Magnetic Dampers can do with a car. Take the front-wheel-drive Audi TT 2.0 Turbo FSI tested by Top Gear early this year, for instance.

- It lapped around the Top Gear test track, faster than the rear-wheel-drive Mazda RX-8 and it was faster even than the also rear-wheel-drive BMW M3 E46. In fact, the Audi TT is the fastest front-wheel-drive car to lap around the TG test-track so far.

Re: Audi RS5 thread.

I'd say that all blacked out this car looks hot...but it still isn't agressive looking.

As for this car's competitor...it's definitely the M3. There is no other car that this will go up against, but let's see how this will compare to the M3. This is probably going to get a DI 420-440bhp engine and the same rear biased AWD from the RS4. This car is going to need the extra power because it's going to be heavier than the M3.

We have some excitement to look forward to in the coming year or two.

Re: Audi RS5 thread.

I am 99% that the engine in RS5 will be V8 4.2 FSI 420 HP, also known from RS4 B7. But I wouldn't mind some extra power...M3 will be lighter than RS5 and RS5 will have AWD, which means that in straight line, we probably know who's the winner. But we also know that driving is not just a straight line and that's where Audi will be better than M3. Just guessing.

Re: Audi RS5 thread.

Audi needs to put the 5.2 lt V10 with 480 hp (same engine with V10 R8) in the RS5. 420 hp are not enough.

No they need to put the 582hp RS6 engine in it if that's what the true output will be and watch the crowd go wild!

Re: Audi RS5 thread.

Instead of the big, heavy, normally aspirated 5.2 V10 engine, what about a twin-turbocharged version of the RS4 high-revving 4.2 V8 FSI producing 525 Bhp?

It would be lighter than if it had a V10 under the bonnet and therefore the handling would be better.

Re: Audi RS5 thread.

Remember then new M3 V8 weighs less than the old I6, so don't assume a V10 is automatically heavier than a V8.

And if the R8 has proven anything for Audi, it is you dont need massive amounts of horsepower to be a fast car. Yet lots of people still complain about not getting enough horsepower to power a small city for a week.

You know M3 (or BMW M in general) has never been about being fast in straight line so saying (/suspecting) that Audi will be better when the road gets twisty is quite brave. But we'll see!

Exactly the ///M division is known for their track capabilities while still having that straight line speed. With S/RS you get loads of grip, with AMG you get immense straight line speed...with ///M you get it all.
