How does this compare to the Allroad?

I'm sorry, I was rash in responding... What I meant was that the ground clearance ranges between 12,5 cm and 18,5 cm for the Allroad, not the standard Avant, which has a standard ground clearance of 12 cm, if I recall correctly. Also, I'm not certain, but I think that regular versions of A6 don't feature the air suspension and hence cannot regulate their ground clearance. The more expensive A8 does, however.

You're right, I searched Audi's German site and found that the ground clearance ranges from 10,5 - 13,5 cm for the A6 Avant equipped with adaptive air suspension (which isn't standard(?)). Those allroad figures are correct too.

Spy shots of a car which appeared to be an A4 Allroad test mule had surfaced last month , now AutoBild has more information which suggest that A4 Allroad has very good chances to see the green light for production.

Of course since Audi is debuting the Q5 crossover vehicle later this year , the A4 Allroad will probably not make it in US soil.

Spied again: 2009 Audi A4 Allroad

Spy photographers have spotted a mule for Audi's upcoming A4 Allroad while undergoing some cold weather test in Sweden. This 2008 A4 is fitted with matte-black wheel arches and an increased ride-height, both of which are key components of Audi's Allroad concept.

Despite this mule's sedan origins, the A4 Allroad will remain a wagon-only offering. Since the new A4 wagon has not yet been revealed, it appears Audi engineers decided to take a covert approach to testing by using this sedan. After the new A4 wagon makes its public debut, we expect to see A4 Allroad prototypes using the appropriate wagon body style.

The wheel arch extensions appear to be integrated into the surrounding design elements, showing an intentional flow from the front and rear bumpers into the newly applied flares. Similarly, a new side sill completes the design to give this test car quite a finished look.

Since its inception, the Audi Allroad has only existed as a spin-off to the A6 wagon. From the looks of this new prototype, it appears that an A4-based Allroad will join the lineup.

Preview: 2009 Audi A4 Allroad


The Audi Allroad, based on the mid-sized A6, is essentially a jacked up version of the standard wagon with protective plastic side cladding and a quattro AWD system. The car is designed for those individuals who want off-road capability but aren’t willing to upsize to full-on SUV. To expand its product portfolio, Audi plans to launch a new Allroad model based on the recently launched B8 A4.

New features the A4 Allroad could adopt include pneumatic air suspension, a dual-clutch transmission and a new 2.0L turbodiesel engine. Power levels would range from 143hp and 320Nm of torque to 170hp and 350Nm of torque. A range topper could also be launched with 204hp and 400Nm of torque available.
Test-mules of a jacked up A4 sporting some distinctive black plastic cladding over the wheel arches have been spotted in Sweden and now this latest rendering gives us a glimpse as to what the final production version will look like. Like the A6 Allroad, the new A4 version will be based on the Avant wagon model but features non-color coded bumpers and an aluminum undertray up front.
Audi is yet to confirm the Allroad’s existence but considering the A4 Avant will be launched next month, and Allroad prototypes have already been spotted, we should see the new model sometime before the end of the year.

Why test the suspension on the sedan?? Planning something special??

Because the Avant is not out yet so the sedan test mule gets less attention from spy photographers.

Like Volvo's XC line of cars, the Audi Allroad is a tall wagon with AWD and off-road capability. To date, however, the Allroad has only been available in a version based around the A6.

These latest spy photos show a new, A4-based Allroad in testing, confirming our news earlier this year that such a model was in the works.

Cues that tip this car as a definite Allroad vehicle include the wider fenders and taller ride height. The next changes expected in the development process are new bumpers with a more ruggedized look, new air intake housings, addition of foglights and other off-road specific design cues.


An A4 Avant Allroad would be the equivalent of the hatchback or fastback versions of those cars. On the other hand, the sedan body of this test car could be an artifact - testing began before the A4 Avant was finished, and so the final car may only be available in wagon form.

Other new features the A4 Allroad could adopt include a dual-clutch transmission and a new 2.0L turbodiesel engine. Power levels would range from 143hp (106kW) and 236lb-ft (320Nm) of torque to 170hp (126kW) and 258lb-ft (350Nm) of torque. A range topper could also be launched with 204hp (179kW) and 295lb-ft (400Nm) of torque available. The remainder of the engines would be the same as all A4 models, and all Allroads by nature feature quattro AWD.

It's not a sportscar I can see that even if the car has Audi Selective Drive

But why do I care, I don't like the A4

This is about as pointless as cars come IMO. Allroads? For what? A jacked up A4 or A6 with extra body cladding is seriously out of date.

These types of vehicles are actually useful. Cars like the A6 Allroad, Subaru Legacy Outback or Volvo XC70 offer good off road performance, plenty of interior space and reduced fuel consumption. They may not have the image of a SUV but they are still premium vehicles. There are people who would like to have these features in a non SUV vehicle.

If these are so useful why do companies make SACs like the X3, Q5 and GLK because they have basically the same function and off roading capabilities as a A6 Allroad.

LOL, the acronym SAC is spreading to encompass all crossovers, I see
Seriously though, some people prefer a car shape that has a bit more flexibility.

I'm a big fan of allroad-type Audis but it does beg the question; why does Audi need this model if there's a Q5?

I can't speak for other countries but in the UK a lot of people aren't comfortable with the perceived 'image' associated with an SUV, no matter how good the car itself. I'd expect an A4 based version to be a viable alternative for those for whom the C6 allroad is too large and/or expensive.

Why would they need an A8 if there's an A6?
Q5 and A4 Allroad will be more different from eachother than the A4 is to A6, and A6 to A8.
And as Mockenrue said, here in Western Europe a lot of people hate SUV cars, but at least know about the upsides such a car has....
