| Re: Motor trend test: 997 Turbo Whilst I was not able to read the above, I have read test drive reports of the new 997 Turbo. Really amazing about the performance numbers the car gets with Tiptronic. I just wish they'd keep the production numbers down on these cars so they also would become sought after rarities as time goes on. But I guess they need to think about their bottom line....

| Re: Motor trend test: 997 Turbo Well this is just the begining. When the PDK tranny is available the car will even me faster. Not to mention the up and coming GT2 which will weigh around 150kg less than the Turbo and boost a nice 530hp. Porsche really knows how to raise the bar. |

| Re: Motor trend test: 997 Turbo The Turbo won't beat the Carrera GT around Nurburgring. The GT does it in around 7 min 30s, maybe less if you have a real hotshot driver. The Turbo would do it in around 7 min 45s. However, a GT2, if built, and if it had the DSG, would come close, but the Carerra GT, despite less torque and no 4wd, has more hp and carts around around 450 lbs less - that is the key. Nevethless, in terms of an 'affordable supercar for the middle class' (i.e. less than 150K), the new Porsche is a killer. We await the first 997 Turbo vs. Gallardo vs. Ferrari F430 vs. Corvette Z06 vs. BMW M6 comparison.

| Re: Motor trend test: 997 Turbo Interesting, but the M6 really doesn't belong there with that group. M

| Re: Motor trend test: 997 Turbo Actually I think the M6 is a lot more capable than people give it credit for. It is a big car and it does carry a bit of extra weight, but there is still 500 hp under the hood and BMW's chassis magic. It will not be disgraced in that company and I do think it should be included. It is a fine car and offers abilities the others do not. I do not think that a GT3 RS could beat a Carrera GT at all or come close: it has less hp, less torque and more weight. But a 997 GT2 RS?...hmmm...more weight but not much more, around 80 hp less but much more torque...perhaps with the ceramic brakes it may get within 5 seconds...

| Re: Motor trend test: 997 Turbo Well, we'll just have to wait and see. According to Sport Auto: The old 996 Turbo did the ring in 7.56 min and the 996 GT3 did it in 7.54. The 996 GT3 RS version did it in 7.47 which is a 9 second deduction of 7.56. Now if the rumored turbo can pull a 7.42 time then a 9 second improvement means 7.33 which is CGT territory my friend!

| Re: Motor trend test: 997 Turbo Hmmmm, I suppose. But then all I can say is that the CGT must be able to do better than 7 mins 30s, but probably not much. We are really getting into some insane times here. I imagine that to go much better you would need something like the Caparo T1, which I bet could come close to breaking the 7 minute barrier. ![]()

| Re: Motor trend test: 997 Turbo Goodness gracious, that Caparo T1 is tiny when seen in that photo with people standing round it for perspective. It looked so much bigger in isolation in its press pictures. No wonder they kept weight down to 500 kg. On another note, which will have the better centre of gravity? 911 GT2 or CGT?

| Re: Motor trend test: 997 Turbo Id din't even know they had an RS version of the GT2 - got any links???? The Caparo will blitz just about everything. It is capable of over 3G braking and cornering, the cornering being almost 3 times that of even a best 'normal' supercars (Carrera GT and Enzo)

The lower the engine sits in the engine bay the better the centre of gravity. We know that the CGT has an exceptional centre of gravity - the best of a V engined car that I can recall - but the GT2 has a boxer engine and this layout affords a very low cofg as a result of the flat six arrangment. So it'd be interesting to see which is superior.
