I started to like the rear on the official photos and now i like it even more, i like the volumes, how they are structured, the subtle lines, the contrast between the colour/aspect of the bumper and the rest of the rear, the exhaust's integration. The design is full of great details.

"It looks dated" is like automotive equivalent of "You have no life" insult around here (and I am guilty of it too in the past). People like throw it around to describe a car they don't like under the impression that somehow magically gives their opinion more credibility. After all, if I am capable of juxtaposing a 3 dimensional design with other contemporary designs and pass a judgment of where it fits within in the time line, I should be smart right, right?

I'd cross out Z4 in that posts but the others are certainly not jewels worthy of being put in the same chest drawer as cuff links and watches inherited by grandparents. Other than that most of Bangle's designs will be looked upon with a smile for next coming years. His initial designs were highly controversial and even a bit immaturely experimental if I may say so. But he entered his phase of maturity at the introduction of the E92 coupe and followed with other well composed and coherent designs like the X5, X6 and now the 5-Series which features a stunning design on the wrong body shape. If the same contour will be passed on to the new 5-Series design then we may very well see the best of his legacy live on. The F01 marks a new era for BMW; consistency over change and that philosophy is present in the F01, E89, X1 and 5-Series GT which all share distinct design trait present in their head and tail lights.

That is something that is difficult for me to explain besides saying that the name sells despite how the cars look, and economically it was a good time, though BMW is leading in sales in the US for the first time in ever during these tough economic times.

Why did the designers had to put the hood joint all the way up and ruin the otherwise very beautiful front look? Not really like this new trend.

Not to mention M-B's quality debacles during those years, and BMW's "Free Maintenance" which M-B dropped (which pissed off many customers), were driving forces toward their Sales "win" over M-B. I know countless people who had problematic M-B's and were sick of them, switching to BMW and vowing to never drive an M-B again. My mother is one of them, she hates BMW's and loves M-B, but traded in her E for a 5, for those reasons alone. As well, she said most people in her office had done the same.

Two weeks ago I saw a fully undisguised white 5 GT (only badges were covered) around Munchen. The car is HUGE and (according to my wife) ugly (also my opinion). Definitely one of the ugliest cars on the market. A pitty because the interior is nice.

I'm a bit disappointed we are not seeing more of 5er GT IRL pics ... since they are all over the Munich already. Spy photographers & co. not active enough anymore?

BTW - since it's a big car it works best in darker colors (like all huge car cars do): black, dark blue, dark gray. Light silver, white & beige doesn't look quite well on this car IMO.

Length wise only - since X6 is shorter (-12cm; wheelbase: -14cm)), while much higher (+13cm), and much wider (+8cm).

So, proportion wise X6 looks much shorter & compacter - much more beefy. While 5er GT looks huge - due to its length, and height as well. A very long car. Longest BMW car ... Just after 7er.

If you want to call it MPV, OK. But then that's the best & most sporty + elegant looking MPV ever. By far.

Ew, no thanks. That looks deformed.

I think this will be a Sales catastrophe for BMW, at least after the initial "buzz" (if that even happens). These German Luxo makes have to thin down the lines, go back to the roots before they tried to have as many models and be as "huge" Ford, Honda, etc.

Again though, I do think the lines and overall design language will look great when fit into a nicely proportioned Sedan.

The 5-Series GT is an MPV with a sleek design. Check out these dimensions compared with the R-Class, both cars are neck and neck when it comes to dimensions, and cost very much the same. If it looks like a duck, weigh like a duck and taste like a duck -- then it's a duck.

R-Class dimensions: Mercedes-Benz Sverige - R-Klass SUV Tourer - Tekniska data

5er GT dimensions: BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo / 5 Series GT, dimensions - motiontrends.com car magazine for auto reviews and technology
