That broken rear shoulder line actually has it's roots in BMW history too most recently it was revived on the CS Concept Car. it is coming to the 6er as it will on the 3er Coupe. The 3er Coupe is likely to inherit the next direction taken with the 6er and offer two different models , one with a refined luxury GT concept the other with a more enthusiasts aimed concept. Truth be told when you finally the 6er you will see a lot of the CS in the design especially in the outline and the rear. The next 3er Coupe seen here is an early design not final because we will get different interpretations from Autobild of this car onwards and upwards to the launch stages when things become a bit more clearer. But the 3er Coupe (F32) will follow the successful formula of the (E92) and that is to have the bloodline but seperate it so it does not continue as a 2dr sedan. This has actually been very successful for BMW so take a bow Chris for pushing that solution. The interpretation here of the 3er looks fine in profile , however the rear resorts to that flick and swoop bootlid of the E46 when you put it at the same angle as this interpretation. The BMW thinking between kidney grilles equal like a "russian doll" philosophy. One size gradually getting smaller to the end. Here it looks like a 5er grille , The 3er will be a few inches condensed to seperate it from the 5er. The V-Shape that incorporates the kidney grille and headlight shapes show simularities but with the outer edges of the headlights being different. The vehicle that will really open the floodgates to multiple 3er interpretations will be the next X3. As they deliberately share the same bloodline and cues but will be interpreted differently for the sedan etc. | |

The 6 is in different class, not to mention the 6er rendring's rear lines are closer to the CS concept than this, which looks like a BLATANT e-class copy. Either way, it's just a chop, so I'm not worried.

Ok, the 3er coupé chop is poor, and the character line on the side indeed looks like an E-coupé...but surely you realise that that line (like those 6er renderings) is supposed to resemble the BMW Concept CS??? If anything, MB made a crappy copy of the CS character line on their new models, not the other way around. Mercedes is on a roll with copying design ideas lately, like the wild lines on the E, the interior of the S/CL and the LED strips.

| I find it ridiculously funny and slightly hypocritical of Mercedes Benz fans to criticise BMW for adopting a family centric design philosophy considering Mercedes Benz have followed this trend for all generations except this current one, but lets wait for the W222 before we decide MB has chosen the reverse tangent, historical design language for all future models PS. When have autobild ever got a BMW photoshop this close to the final reveal considering the distance until the premiere, should this even be a discussion. |

| With the traditional (7-year) lifecycle it should be something like this (for Germany/Europe): F30 3 Series Sedan - End of 2011/Early 2012 F31 3 Series Touring - Fall 2012 F32 3 Series Coupe - Fall/Late 2013 F33 3 Series Cabrio - Spring 2014 |

| Apparently the F30 is going to appear slightly ahead of schedule.

Even 'worse' for BMW fans...MB has had this character line 10s of years ago already: ![]() But that line really is completely different from the BMW CS. But still

| This line was common design element in that time (~1950s). Not only on MB cars. Eg. BMW 500-series, Alfa Romeo 1900, various post-war Jaguar & Rolls-Royce models. Etc. The element was a stylized interpretation of a rear wheel arch from the older pre-war & mid-war models. ![]() After that - in 60s - a straight continuous shoulder line was introduced, and later in 70s it became even more evident & 3D - crease / fold like. In 70s this detail was reduced, and lead to more conservative design in 80s. 90s were still conservative, with some modernistic touches, while the new millennium brought a more expressive design again - also reviving the more expressive elements from the past: more relief surfacing, discontinued shoulder lines, etc. ![]() |

| But the fact remains.. MB brought it back to production cars on the modern days.. And if BMW follows it will be called just that.. following.. Like when BMW brought back the raised boot ( bangle butt).. when it infact had been seen decades before..

| I´m with Artist here. It´s not a MB trade mark, it was not invented by them, but they have added it to their new line-up and people associete it with them, also fits with the neo-retro style of Mercedes. I think the current shoulder line on the BMW´s lineup fits BMW phylosophy perfectly, not sure about the change. |
