Is it really? Both transmissions are robotised manual gearboxes of much the same technology. I've heard and read that the Ferrari 'boxes give superior shift quality too... and about the same shift speed.

The SMG III is a mandatory inclusion for an M5, experience shows that the car is hamstrung by a six-speed manual. In the Ferrari on the other hand, the transmission choice is the buyer's and the manual does nothing to detract from the driving experience.
