Do you think BMW regrets making //M cars out of the X5 and X6 over the 1series? In this pitiful current global market, I sure do. Ohhh well I guess. OPEC insiders say fuel prices will begin its climb at the end of the first quarter. Small-er cars will begin their reign.

Re: Do you think BMW regrets making //M cars

Having a pocket-rocket bullet like 135i in the list, do we really need a production M1?

On the other hand, having successful performance trucks like Ml-63, G-55 etc around, M version of X-series does make sense!

You should be aware US market is still the biggest M market (same goes for AMG etc) ... And people there are not very interested in small cars. Not even M1. M3, M5, M6, X5 M , X6 M --- much more appreciated products in US market. Despite the crisis. Russians & Middle Easterns aslo like bigger BMW cars over the small ones.

So, it comes down to Germany - which likes small cars but it also likes small & particularly diesel engines. And also the UK: where RHD is an extra cost - and small cars insmall series (eg. M1) wouldn't be profitable at all.

M1 or Z2M over X5 M / X6 M. Perhaps sometimes when targeted customer base would start to buy & appreciate small premium cars as well.

Regarding "small cars will begin to reign": it much more affect economy brands than the premium ones. Yet premium brands will be affected as well. But ... M cars are not a high-volume production cars so there will always be customers for big M cars. Not so sure for small ones. Regarding the "reign" - it will be more a domination - but large cars will still exsist.

Re: Do you think BMW regrets making //M cars

We tried to make the 1er into an M car using the resources available to us but it did not provide the results we were expecting , unfortunately the outgoing six cylinder engine proved to be too heavy for the car and this was highly evident.

Although we are returning to the question of a 1er coupe based above the current 135i it will not be a M car but a more progressive upgrade and then with a turbo charged four cylinder currently testing in semi disguised 1er Coupe's. Will be the entry performance 1er Coupe.

Although the first disguised next-gen 1er sporthatches leave the prototype workshop before the Spring , The Coupe and Cabrio will not be replaced until eighteen months after the sporthatch launch.
So there is plenty of time.

But it falls back on the problem - You are impatient.
The 1er Coupe has just passed a year for sales in Europe whereas the North American/Canadian anniversary is in March.
It's far too early to discuss such progression when the car is still relatively new.

I know!! I'm beyond impatient. The car hasnt even had a facelift yet. I think that would be the perfect time if they were to introduce anything ''more special'' in the U.S.

I can't believe how long that turbo charged petrol 4 cylinder needs to be introduced. First M3 mules, now "semi disguised 1er Coupes." It's time to launch that engine, an 'winner' for many models, 1er, 3er, Z4. Time to get a move on...

Best regards, south

I know it would have come my way instead of the MCS should it have been available

Re: Do you think BMW regrets making //M cars

On the topic: I hope the hype from developing* countries wear off much faster than anticipated, the US takes the logical (and only) step towards downsizing and that BMW subsequently drops all SUV M-models.

*)Russia, China and others.

Re: Do you think BMW regrets making //M cars

The only good thing i see on Co2 emission debate is that manufactures must downsize their cars. Get them smaller and lighter.

The downside is they go turbo route.

Turbo s i like for daily. But for sheer driving, fun and throttle response a thru high rev engine is the only engine which belongs in a 1 serie s ///M car.

All the big boats like the x5m x6m M5 and M6 and lately also the M3 does not need racebred engines anymore because those things are way to big and way to heavy to begin with. So all these boats can have turbo engines good for american market. Let us european get an High Rev ///M and i mean the M from Motorsport and not from Marketing and build us a car which we can enjoy again in cornering and on trackdays. 1 series M hatchback 3 doors version would raise my heartbeat. Nice 3.0 6 cil engine 320hp and 8000 rpm and 1250kg would get me so fast to a dealer even a police man in a veyron couldn t catch me before i signed the papers.

Now lets hope ///M build me one before i get to old and before we drive on electric cars.

Re: Do you think BMW regrets making //M cars

We'll get some crazy turbos as well. Just wait till they are introduced in F1 cars, and then the know-how transfered into production cars.

Of course under one condition: F1 have to survive.

I would not mind BMW M acquiring the whole Tesla Project, Lotus and all, just to show they mean business.

X6M is an about as unenvironmentally conscious display one could ever imagine. But we know the story, BMW was not fast enough to pull the plug on the project. It is not hard to imagine what it would have sounded like had BMW predicted the crisis just half a year earlier.... "Oh, why would anyone build cars lke the X5M in the world we live in today?".

Like I said earlier, lets hope some countries gets is sooner than later.
